The Eldredge Public Library's entire collection of
historic Chatham newspapers has now been digitized and is available
online as well as inside the Library. These digital pages have been
indexed in order to be searchable, and are online in a Digital
Newspaper Collection. The digital newspaper collection contains
page images of the local Chatham newspapers from 1871-1899, 1918-1939,
1941 - 1943, and from 1965 to 2008.
The digitization of these newspapers with subsequent
keyword search capability, as well as more advanced search capabilities,
has made this historic source of Chatham and Cape Cod history more useful
to researchers as well as the general public alike. The Digital Newspaper
Collection is available online, as well as on computers within the Library.

*Please note that due to copyright issues related
to the online version of the Cape Cod Chronicle, we are restricted
from displaying newspaper page images beginning January 18, 2001 to
the present. Users may search for information on every page
in the collection, including those pages with display restrictions,
but if the search produces results after 2001, the page image will
not be displayed online. To view and/or print those particular
page images, you can either contact the Reference Librarian by e-mail
or phone (508-945-5170) or visit us here at the library. The
entire collection is still available on microfilm.

Microsearch Corporation
of Saugus, MA is our technology partner and has provided the digitization,
search and hosting services necessary to turn our microfilm collection
into searchable and retrievable newspaper page images, for both
online search and retrieval from this web site, as well as on
computers inside the Library. Microsearch specializes in
online document search, and provides this service to other Massachusetts
Libraries.
|
The technology
Microsearch Corporation has used to create the search and retrieval
capabilities is new. We believe we may be the first library
in the country which has the ability to search across all newspaper
images and retrieve the page with the search term highlighted
within a fully functioning Adobe PDF page. Adobe was chosen
because it provides the newspaper page images with a superior
replication of the look and feel of the original paper.
